Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
