A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill presented on Monday would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
